One man’s search for calm amidst a global pandemic, lead him to the beach. A few random drawings in the sand and he felt a little bit better. Fast forward a few years and now he is teaching hundreds of others the power of exploring creativity and mindfulness using the sand as his canvas!
Back in 2020, a global pandemic and unprecedented times found Kenrick(he/him) a father of one, in a nationwide lockdown. No work, and no contact with friends, and his mental health was declining. He had one thing on his side; nature.
One day, when walking the dog and playing with his toddler at the beach, Kenrick noticed that his very active daughter stayed in a circle that he had drawn in the sand. The next day he tried it again and she stayed in the circle! His designs became more and more elaborate and sand art had him hooked.
As someone who had never been able to sit still (hello adult ADHD diagnosis), Kenrick found walking around in circles on the beach and exploring his creativity made a lot of sense.
Around the same time, he was exploring mindfulness and meditation. Being conscious of his breath, while also moving his body worked well and brought about a profound sense of calm.
When the lockdowns came to an end, Kenrick produced a large 30m wide Mandala (a geometric configuration of symbols) which people really loved.
With a local reporter doing a write-up and Kenrick finding quite a following on Instagram, a personal practice became something more.
Kenrick wanted to help others experience the freedom and creativity of creating large-scale sand art, so he began running small classes. Each class has an element of mindfulness and meditation, to centre the mind and body and help everybody to slow down.
Kenrick has a passion to help Neurodiverse youth and adults thrive in life and be all they can be.
Kenrick lives in Pāpāmoa Beach in the Bay of Plenty, with his incredible wife Jasmine Kroeze who is also an artist and two young children. He enjoys being near the water, kitesurfing, trail running and any other adrenaline-filled activity.
He currently has blue, green, pink, red, brown HAIR.
